Brazilian Keratin Hair Treatment QOD GOLD 1000ml Review by great dae (MN)
I bought this treatment after hours (yes hours) of reviewing on different types of products to use and I was torn between this one and the Coppola product and this one offered more for the money in the number of treatments and they all have about the same type of reviews for effectiveness! I am not a hair dresser (I'm a nurse). I have naturally curly very fine but a whole lot of it -hair and I am Caucasian. When others say they have the same thing on their reviews and have pictures of their hair with the review mine is always 100 times worse and thicker.
I did the treatment as follows:
4 days prior to start of the treatment I did a Henna hair strengthening treatment which was recommended on a site for severely damaged hair only. My hair was falling out and the hair dresser couldn't believe how bad my hair had gotten and she had to cut about 3 inches off the ends to fix the really bad damage.
Day 1:
1) dyed my hair washed it with clarifying shampoo (Suave clarifying) twice (I dyed my hair darker so I knew I would be okay with the clarifying shampoo, when I do this treatment again I will clarify my hair then dye it with my regular brown color and then proceed to the next step. (My hair did not turn red or any other unexpected color.)
2) Dried my hair on the coolest heat setting with my blow dryer...I divided my hair into 4 quarters and clipped up each section and as I took each section and dried it "completely" I put it back up in the clip because it's so damaged and snarls' up easy. Took 1 hour to dry my hair.
3) I got a fan (did it on a beautiful warm (non humid) day with a window open and the fan blowing the air out the window from across me (but not blowing directly on me). I wore gloves and also it recommended a face mask on all the sites so I did that too.
4) I put my computer on to a video of a girl doing this actual treatment on youtube.com (type in QOD gold keratin treatment). I watched it one more time before starting (I was nervous from the hair falling out reviews that all the keratin treatment reviews have).
5) Started taking little sections and applying it to my hair with a hair dying brush and then going over each section with my comb to wipe off any excess until all 4 sections were completed. Now I didn't know if I should leave it sit or not and some sites said to leave it sit for 20-30 minutes so I did leave it sit since it didn't bother me at all and had no watery eyes or burning that some reviews stated (I think they used to much product if that happened). I went over my hair to make sure that I got the product on every strand of hair and removed any excess again with a fine tooth comb...I didn't have really any excess keratin on my comb. It took about 1.5 hours to apply the product.
6) While letting it sit I washed up the brush and container and got ready to dry my hair again. I used my blow dryer on the coolest setting and did small sections at a time (my hair it thick) and clipped it up after each section was "completely" dry. I used a brush that was made out of ceramic ion releasing blah blah blah that it said with vent holes all through the brush (my hair felt smooth and nice already)!
7) With my dry hair I set my titanium plated babyliss flat iron on 400 degrees (my hair is damaged pretty bad from hair chemical straightening process and constant flat ironing). So I chose a lower heat setting. I took little sections starting with the nape of the head (back bottom part) and carefully flat ironed each section 4 times sometimes up to 6 times on harder to straighten hair sections. I did not have any burning smells or bad fumes but I also kept the fan blowing across me out to the window. It took me about 2 hours to complete the flat iron process myself.
8) The directions said you can not use any product or get the hair wet at all or use any clips either so I left it straight and didn't do anything to it except after waking up each morning and straightening any bent or curled up sections from sleeping on it. It says you can wash and style your hair as usual after 48 hours but I really wanted to make sure it worked so I kept it in for 72 hours (I'll do just 48 hours next time). I did shower with a cap on very very carefully as needed.)
72 hours later:
I washed my hair with Hair One for colored hair (that doesn't have sulfates in it that strip the hair of it's proteins). I left it air dry since I didn't have to go anywhere but I wanted to see what would happen if I didn't put gel in it and straighten it out with my titanium flat iron! It was the most joyful day of my life so far (31 years).
It is soft non-frizzy hair! I have such curly hair that it is not bone straight but it went from taking 50 minutes with a titanium flat iron (1.15 hours using a ceramic flat iron) to literally 10 minutes tops for getting it perfectly straight).
I can go in the rain and when it dries it still stays non-frizzy!
I can ride on a motorcycle and it stays non-frizzy or doesn't poof up either on it!
Humidity just got horrible here and it stays non-frizzy!!!!
I can't believe what it did for my hair!
For about 16 treatments for $250 versus paying a hair dresser $300 on up for a single treatment. I can handle doing the treatment myself, but it does take a long time and it's a lot of work...but worth it for me!
I will let you know if my hair starts falling out! So far it's been a week and it's falling out the same amount as it was prior to the treatment.
One more thing I have a keratin shower treatment for my hair that I had prior to this treatment that I have used once now since it's been 7 days and I intend on using it weekly to hopefully make the treatment last longer. I got it at a Sally Beauty Supply store-Brazilian keratin mask or something like that.
For the titanium flat iron- I would buy any brand of titanium flat iron as long as it has a 450 degree changeable temp setting on it! It says on some websites that the ceramic flat irons absorb the keratin and may not work as well because of that absorption.
UPDATE:
It's been several months and I did another treatment and it worked out wonderful I think my hair became 99.9% none frizzy with this 2nd treatment...I do not have to wear any products (gel, hairspray, moose, frizzy serums) nothing!!!! And it's been humid everyday and I've been in rain and not worried at either! My only complaint is that my hair itself grows so fast that I can only go 2 months without the frizzy part making my hair poof out because it's still thick!

I've used this product for 3 years now on many types of hair. It's always been silky, shiney, smooth and extremely 'sealing' to the ends.
I used this brand new bottle and I believe the formula must be different from before. The product came out of the bottle differently as well. Very thick getting out. I've read all the litigation on the product concerning formaldehyde but I didn't think they changed the formula of the old stuff. My clients hair was not shiney, not silky and the ends seemed to be more freyed than before I used it this time. It only got straight. It was the opposite of the old results. It left me confused and a little bummed out. Not sure I want to use the rest.

The QOD Gold was worth the money. My hair looks great and it doesn't smell burned. Before I tried this product I tried the Liquid Keratin Kit. It worked pretty well and I liked the results. Did maintenence with the Aphogee conditioner and the Loreal sulfate free line. Nothing special. It lasted for the six weeks. My hair was silky and manageable--I have no relaxer and I have kinky wavy thick (African) hair and I live in Florida (humidity-world!). As promised, the Liquid Keratin dried in half the time, blah blah blah. My daughter used it too. We were happy with it and decided to try the salon brands to see if it would last longer. I was skeptical because I read the blogs about fumes and formaldehyde and even hair damage.
But I decided to get it anyway. It's pricey, but this whole bottle is still less than the cost of one salon treatment. IT IS AMAZING!! It smells like bananas, and you should use it sparingly. Coat each (small) section of your hair with the lotion. It is the texture of a light conditioner. An ounce and a half max two ounces should cover your entire head if you have thick shoulder length hair. Here is the secret I learned from one of the blogs: let your hair air-dry a little, and then blow dry in small section until it is SUPER DRY!!. If it still feels tacky, sticky or greasy it's NOT DRY! Keep drying it until it feels silky and slightly poofy. Then flat iron at the highest temp your hair can stand. Keep going over it until it is silky and straight. There are other tips on some of the blogs and in some of the reviews for other keratin products. The research will be worth it.
One final note, I color my hair to cover grey and this product did not change my color. I don't know if that is true for the less expensive qod products but the Liquid Keratin brand gave my hair a reddish cast that I don't like that much. If you like the slight reddish highlights then this won't matter to you. I won't be going back to relaxers, because the hard water in my town and the harsh chemicals in relaxers were really messing up my hair. (Also, I couldn't enjoy the pool with a relaxer, where with Keratin, i can swim all I want.) I don't know how long this will last since i only did it a few days ago, but I do like the fact that it doesn't have that burned smell that I got with the Liquid Keratin. Enjoy!
