I have a bunch of these in service around my house and they're the best replacement I've found for a standard incandescent lamp so far. As an early adopter I paid $40 each for most of them but prices have recently dropped to $25 at Home Depot and will likely fall further as sales pick up. Better color than CFL, zero warmup time to full brightness, and they're not harmed by being switched on and off frequently, something that will kill most CFLs quickly and they contain no mercury so there is no disposal hassle. On top of all that, they work quite well on an ordinary dimmer switch, though the 40W equiv version does better, apparently different electronics inside.
I do wish they offered a choice of color temperatures though. These are 2700K, a very close match to the traditional incandescent bulb, and understandable since this is what they aim to replace. Still, this looks very yellow to me having become accustomed to 3,000K CFL. I'd like to see a 5000-6500K daylight version for my exterior lighting and task lamps too.

The Philips people package these bulbs in impossible-to-open heavy duty plastic and cardboard.
I gave it to my husband, who can open anything, but after failing to open it with BOX-CUTTERS he finally had to resort to a HACKSAW!!! One of these $40 bulbs slipped during his struggle with it and fell on the floor, but luckily did not break.
What is the manufacturer thinking?

we have 6 of these around the house now. If you are replacing incandescents, this will be the least jarring efficient substitute you can buy.
